Kites Fill Lahore’s Skies With Colour as Basant Celebrations Resume
LAHORE: The skies over Lahore came alive with vibrant colours as thousands of kites soared above the city, marking the revival of Basant celebrations after a long gap of nearly 20 years. The three-day festival has brought renewed energy, joy, and nostalgia to residents and visitors alike.
Kite flyers from across Punjab and overseas arrived in the provincial capital to take part in the festivities. Rooftops, streets, and historic areas—particularly in the Walled City—buzzed with excitement as families and enthusiasts gathered to celebrate the arrival of spring.
The Punjab government allowed the return of Basant under strict safety regulations. Authorities implemented a controlled system for the sale of kites and strings, imposed limits on kite-flying zones, and enforced bans near sensitive areas, including airport flight paths, to prevent accidents.
Despite high demand, kite materials were sold at significantly higher prices this year, with shortages reported at registered shops. To manage the situation, officials permitted supplies from nearby districts to meet demand. While enthusiasm remained strong, rising costs limited participation for some residents.
Major city intersections and public spaces were decorated with colourful installations, including giant kites, adding to the festive atmosphere. Liberty Chowk and surrounding areas became key attractions, drawing large crowds throughout the celebrations.
Provincial authorities closely monitored arrangements to ensure public safety. Senior officials conducted inspections of traffic management, emergency services, and rooftop safety measures, warning that violations of regulations would not be tolerated.
Public transport services were expanded to reduce traffic congestion, and citizens were urged to celebrate responsibly. Officials emphasized that safety remains the top priority to ensure Basant can continue in the future without incident.
The return of Basant has been widely welcomed as a symbol of cultural revival, bringing colour, tradition, and festivity back to Lahore’s skies.
