RAWALPINDI, August 4: Preparations for Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day are underway across Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with markets displaying national flags, badges, green-and-white apparel, decorative lights, and other festive merchandise. However, traders say soaring inflation has significantly reduced consumer spending, leaving many stalls with fewer customers than expected.

Shopkeepers report that the prices of Independence Day items have risen sharply compared to last year, making traditional celebrations more expensive for families. Large national flags, children’s themed clothing, decorative accessories, and lighting now cost considerably more, prompting many shoppers to limit their purchases to smaller, lower-priced items such as badges and miniature flags.

Vendors say they have invested heavily in stocking seasonal merchandise despite higher wholesale prices and remain hopeful that sales will improve as August 14 approaches. Many plan to continue operating their stalls until Independence Day in the hope of recovering their costs.

Residents acknowledge that enthusiasm for celebrating Independence Day remains strong, but inflation has affected household budgets, forcing many families to prioritize essential expenses over festive shopping.
